The importance of being Ernest in Havana
26-January-2009

Memories of Ernest Hemingway are alive and well in Havana.

The literary great’s mark can still be easily seen in some of his favourite Havana haunts, notes a Cubatur guide, who says the novelist “fell in love” with the city.

Among points of interest for those wishing to retrace Hemingway’s time in the Cuban capital is Room 511 of Old Havana’s Ambos Mundos Hotel, where Hemingway spent a lot of time in and which now serves as a small museum.

As well, Old Havana’s Bodeguita del Medio bar/restaurant regularly drew Hemingway, and another of its claims to fames is that it’s “the cradle of the daiquiri,” a drink Hemingway appreciated.

Indeed, Hemingway’s signature appears on Bodeguita del Medio placemats and the walls are covered with pictures of celebrities who dined or bent their elbows there, among them Hemingway’s granddaughter Mariel, who became an actress.

Old Havana is also home to La Floridita restaurant, which has a statue of Hemingway, who was a regular there.

“We loved him very much,” the Cubatur guide says of Hemingway, adding Havana hosts an annual Hemingway look-a-like contest, with winners looking “really, really similar” to the novelist.

A lot of tourists visiting Havana are interested in Hemingway, she continues, suggesting Cuba’s capital may be able to provide more insights into his life than any other city.
